Digitalising legal services using Data Intelligence and AI

Context

Lextenso, a major player in legal publishing and services in France, has launched a legal search engine called labase-lextenso.fr in 2016. This platform features a database of over 4 million legal documents (including journal articles, books and case law decisions), allowing users to find relevant information through comprehensive searches.

With the increasing volume of legal data and the growing number of users of the platform, traditionalinformation management  – which was often fragmented and in various formats – no longer met current demands. To ensure effective responses to user needs, Lextenso decided to modernize its data management and analysis methods.

Challenges

To tackle the challenge of digital transformation, TRIMANE has assisted Lextenso in modernizing its digital services by providing consulting, innovation, data engineering, and data architecture services aligned with Lextenso’s operations.

As a trusted partner for many years, TRIMANE harnesses the expertise of its teams by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as digital solutions, Data Intelligence, Cloud computing, and Artificial Intelligence. This approach enables TRIMANE to address Lextenso’s needs, introduce new services, and reinforce its position as a market leader.

Solutions & methodologies

To support Lextenso in its digital transformation, a comprehensive and integrated approach has been established. The first stage involved implementing an ambitious corporate strategy aimed at transforming Lextenso into a fully data-driven organization. This approach led to the creation of a robust action plan that encompasses the strategic, organizational, technical, governance, and human resources dimensions essential for this transition.

A key element of this support was the development of an advanced Artificial Intelligence tool for legal prediction, leveraging automatic natural language processing (NLP) technologies and thesaurus. This tool allows for the in-depth structuring and examination of legal documents, enabling accurate estimates of potential litigation outcomes. It provides greater visibility for legal professionals, empowering them to adapt their strategies based on the resulting forecasts.

From a technical perspective, a scalable architecture has been deployed, utilizing high-performance solutions such as Tableau Software, Python, and Microsoft Azure. This enables seamless extraction, transformation, and indexing of data in the Algolia search engine, ensuring reliable population of the Lextenso database. New management rules were defined as part of an in-depth analysis, leading to the development of data flows and dashboards that facilitate actionable insights. Additionally, both internal and external data sources, including European and African court rulings, have been integrated via APIs, significantly enriching Lextenso’s documentary holdings.

Benefits

Lextenso’s digital transformation has yielded significant improvements in research performance and customer satisfaction. With the import of over three million legal decisions into the data warehouse, Lextenso now boasts an extensive database that offers an unprecedented wealth of information. All data has been meticulously cleaned to ensure quality, and methods for modeling unstructured data have been developed to optimize storage and utilization. Through semantic analysis, links between related case law have been identified, providing a more coherent overall view.

Moreover, appropriate technical solutions were implemented to ensure that tools and technologies met user requirements, enhancing the overall experience. Our teams are proud to have contributed to this transformation, which has positively and profoundly changed Lextenso’s operations.

“We had the pleasure of working with Trimane on the legal search engine, LaBase-Lextenso.fr. Their expertise in data processing was a crucial asset to the success of this complex project.
